Many automobile segments in India have now become crowded. Because of this, there are some cars that flow under the radar and are not being talked about in the media. Here, are 10 of them.
Nissan Kicks
Yes, Nissan Kicks is still on sale in the Indian market. Although it is not doing well, Nissan sold only 158 units of the SUV in February 2022. Kicks start from Rs. 9.49 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 14.90 lakhs ex-showroom. It is still being offered with two petrol engine options.

There is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The 1.5-litre unit produces 106 PS and 142 Nm whereas the 1.3-litre unit produces 156 PS and 254 Nm. The 1.3-litre engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the 1.3-litre engine is offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic transmission.
Mahindra XUV300
The XUV300 might not be the biggest seller in the segment but it has been doing decent numbers. In February 2022, Mahindra sold 4,511 units. It comes with many segment features but recently Mahindra has removed some features. It starts at Rs. 8.16 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 13.67 lakhs ex-showroom.
There is a petrol engine and a diesel engine on offer. Both are known to produce class leading torque figures. The 1.2-litree turbocharged petrol engine produces 110 PS and 200 Nm of peak torque whereas the 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 117 PS and 300 Nm. Both the engines are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed AMT.
Hyundai Verna
The mid-size sedan segment is not doing well in the Indian market because SUVs are currently trending. Hyundai launched the facelifted Verna in 2020. Despite being two years old, it is one of the most feature loaded mid-size sedan. Hyundai sold 1,058 units of Verna in Feb’2022. Hyundai is already working on a new generation of Verna which has been spotted in abroad.
The prices of Verna starts at Rs. 9.32 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 15.36 lakhs ex-showroom. It is offered in three engine options. There is 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 115 PS and 144 Nm, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol produces 120 PS and 172 Nm and the 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 115 PS and 250 Nm.
Kia Sonet
The Sonet has been doing pretty well in the Indian market. Kia sold 6,154 units of Sonet in February. It is probably the best looking compact SUV in the Indian market. Kia is working on updating the feature list of the Sonet. The prices of the Sonet starts at Rs. 7.15 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 13.79 lakhs ex-showroom.
It is being offered with three engine options. There is a naturally aspirated petrol engine, turbo petrol engine and a diesel engine. Sonet comes loaded with features and is offered in plenty of variants. So, there is one variant for everyone.
Jeep Compass
Jeep launched the facelifted version of the Compass last year. They did made some significant changes to the interior. However, because being priced higher than other mid-size SUV, the sales numbers are less than other SUVs. Jeep sold 1,020 units of Compass in Feb’22.
The prices of the Compass starts at Rs. 17.79 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 29.34 lakhs ex-showroom. You can get a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and 2.0-litre diesel engine. Both are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an automatic transmission with both the engines. Jeep also offers all-wheel drive system on some of the variants.
MG Hector
MG took the mid-size market by storm when the first launched the Hector in the Indian market. However, now it has started to lose its charm as the competition has started to increase. MG sold 2,102 units of Hector in February’22. The prices of the Hector starts at Rs. 14.14 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 20.10 lakhs ex-showroom.
It is offered in in two engine options, there is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine. There is also a hybrid system on offer with the turbo petrol engine. Both the engines are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. The turbo petrol is also offered with a CVT automatic transmission.
Honda City
Honda launched the fifth gen City in 2020. It has been doing decently well in the Indian market considering people are not buying sedans anymore. Honda sold 1,141 units of City in Feb’22. The prices of City starts at Rs. 11.23 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 15.18 lakhs ex-showroom. Honda will also launch the City Hybrid soon in the Indian market and they still have the 4th Gen City on sale.
City is offered with two 1.5-litre engines. The petrol engine produces 121 PS and 145 Nm whereas the diesel engine produces 100 PS and 200 Nm. Both gearboxes come with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. There is also a CVT automatic transmission for the petrol engine.
Toyota Urban Cruiser
The Urban Cruiser is the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Because it is a straight-up rebadged Brezza, many people don’t notice it on roads. Maruti will soon be launching the new-gen Vitara Brezza and Toyota will also do the same.
The prices of the Urban Cruiser starts at Rs. 8.87 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 11.58 lakhs ex-showroom. It is offered only with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. It produces 105 PS and 138 Nm. Gearbox options include 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Honda WR-V
Honda launched the facelifted version of the WR-V in 2020. The changes were cosmetic only. Because of the crossover design, the WR-V has not been doing well in the Indian market. The prices of WR-V starts at Rs. 8.82 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 11.86 lakhs ex-showroom.
It is sold in two engine options. There is a petrol engine that produces 90 PS and 110 Nm. It is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Then there is a 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 100 PS and 200 Nm. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross
S-Cross is currently the least selling vehicle by Maruti Suzuki. Reason behind this is that it has to compete against other mid-size SUVs whereas the design of the S-Cross looks like a crossover. Maruti sold just 1,151 units of the S-Cross in Feb’22.. The manufacturer might bring the new generation of S-Cross to India which has now been on sale in the foreign markets. The prices of the S-Cross starts at Rs. 8.80 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 12.77 lakhs ex-showroom.
