As part of the behind-the-scenes deal making that takes places at the Cannes Film Festival, producers for Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” are looking for someone who wants to buy and distribute the movie, which will forever be known for the accidental shooting death of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Ryan Donnell Smith, a producer for “Rust,” confirmed to the New York Times Tuesday that he was at the festival, looking for international buyers who will help get the Western into theaters. That is, if audiences are clamoring to see a movie so associated with tragedy and controversy. The New York Times also reported that distribution plans for “Rust” in the United States are not yet certain, including whether it will be screened in movie theaters or go straight to a streaming service.
Smith’s appearance at Cannes comes as Baldwin has been in Montana, with the movie’s cast and some new crew members, trying to finish up where they left off in October 2021. That’s when the veteran film and TV actor, playing a grizzled outlaw in the late 1800s, accidentally shot Hutchins on the film’s New Mexico set. Baldwin and Hutchins had been rehearsing a gunfight scene, and the actor was handling a revolver that had somehow been loaded with a live round, when it should only have held dummy rounds.
After settling a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Hutchins’ widower, Baldwin returned to the set in April. He and others have said that finishing the film was a way to pay tribute to Hutchins’ legacy and to help earn money that could go to Hutchins’ young son. On Monday, Baldwin shared an Instagram post indicating that it was the last day on the set and filming had wrapped. The post showed Baldwin smiling and celebrating with his young co-star, Patrick Scott McDermott, who plays his grandson in the movie.
News also came last month that prosecutors in New Mexico had decided to dismiss involuntary murder charges against Baldwin after questions arose whether the gun had been modified in a way that would have made it easier for it to discharge suddenly and without him pulling the trigger. Baldwin long denied any responsibility for Hutchins’ death. Prosecutors said, however, that they are still mulling whether to refile criminal charges against Baldwin, pending further investigation and forensic analysis.
