All iPhone 16 models may arrive with a ‘new’ Action button


Apple launched its latest iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineups in September. With the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max models, the Cupertino-based tech giant introduced a new user-configurable button known as the Action button. This button was restricted only to the Pro models in the iPhone 15 lineup. However, that is expected to change as Apple is reportedly planning to add the button to all iPhone 16 models. According to a report by MacRumors, the company is planning to include the Action button on the entire iPhone 16 lineup.

Action button on iPhone 15 Pro models
Apple started planning and designing the Action button in 2021. Initially, the company had plans to introduce the button alongside haptic-enabled volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple cancelled the haptic volume and power buttons due to unresolved technical issues, however, retained the Action button which eventually made its way into the iPhone 15 Pro‌ and Pro Max units.

The Action button replaces the mute switch on the iPhone 15 Pro models which served only a single purpose. In comparison, the Action button assists ‌iPhone‌ users with a variety of use cases. The button can be configured to perform a range of functions which include using the flashlight, camera, voice memo and more.

Action button on iPhone 16: What to expect
As per the report, Apple is planning to add even more functionality to the Action button in the iPhone 16 lineup. The company is reportedly planning to change it from a mechanical to a capacitive-type button. The report claims that Apple is currently developing the revamped Action button under the codename Atlas.

The updated Action button is expected to function similarly to the Touch ID Home button on older ‌iPhone‌ models or the Force Touch trackpad on found on more recent MacBooks. The company’s internal documentation also claims that the updated Action button will feature a force sensor, which can detect changes in pressure, as well as “tact-switching functionality.”

The report also notes that Apple may add the Action button on the next iteration of the budget-friendly fourth-generation iPhone SE which is rumoured to launch in 2025.
