Hyundai India’s mid-size sedan the Verna has been left quite behind in terms of the competition after the launch of the new sedans from the German and Czech automotive brands Volkswagen and Skoda respectively. To beat these two new rivals in their own game, the country’s second-largest automaker Hyundai India is planning to bring the all-new facelift of its Verna with a more powerful 1.5 TGDI turbo petrol powerplant that will produce segment leading power and torque.
It is believed that the company will be launching an all-new 1.5-liter turbo-petrol unit in India because the 1.4-liter engine currently powering the Creta, Seltos, and Alcazar won’t pass the new RDE norms under Phase II of BS6 transition set to happen before April 2023. The same engine will be offered in the 2023 all-new Verna as well.
As of yet, precise specifications of this engine are not yet known. However, rumors indicate that it may be capable of producing 160 PS of peak power and 260-265 Nm of peak torque. According to sources, this engine will be compatible with DCT and manual gearboxes. Previously the 2017-2020 Hyundai Verna in its top-spec trim came equipped with a 1.4 VTVT petrol engine that produced around 99 bhp and 132 Nm of torque.

The 2023 Verna with the 160 PS turbo petrol engine will crush its competing sedans – the Virtus and Slavia from Volkswagen and Skoda respectively. Currently both of these sedans – in their top-end trims – get the 1.5 TSI turo petrol motor that generates a segment-leading 150 PS of peak power and 250 Nm of peak torque.
A few months ago a test mule of the upcoming all-new Hyundai Verna was spied on the roads of Gurugram in a fully-camouflaged avatar. Similar to the Venue and Creta, the new Verna is most likely to feature a split headlight design with daytime running LEDs on top. A parametric grille, first seen on the brand-new Tucson, will also be added to the new Verna.
Front parking sensors, a higher waistline, and diamond-cut alloy wheels were also observed on the test mule of the Hyundai Verna. The car looked to be far longer than the existing Verna, indicating that it will be longer than 4.5 metres, just like all of its new rivals. The 2023 Hyundai Verna’s split LED tail lights joined by an LED light bar at the rear might make it the first car in its class to use this particular aesthetic element. However, the pictures did not show the interior of the automobile.
Other key highlights on the all-new 2023 Hyundai Verna will be the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) technology that will make the sedan more safer, a powerful 1.4 liter-4 cylinder turbo petrol engine borrowed from the Creta compact SUV and completely revamped design, inside-out. We expect Hyundai to showcase the all-new Verna at the 2023 Indian Auto Expo, followed by the official launch later next year.
Once launched the Hyundai Verna will take on the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, Honda City and other mid size sedans. As for the price the company could launch the forthcoming 2023 Verna with an estimated price of Rs 10.00 Lakh for the base variant.
