book my show profitable: BookMyShow turns profitable; FY23 operating revenue nears Rs 1,000 crore

BookMyShow, an online entertainment ticketing platform, swung to a net profit in FY23 from a year-earlier loss, as it rebounded from the impact of the pandemic-induced lockdowns and challenges to its operations in the last couple of years.

BookMyShow’s operating revenue surged more than threefold to Rs 976 crore in the year ended March 31, from Rs 277 crore in FY22, showed financial documents sourced from company data and intelligence platform Tofler.

During the year, the company posted a net profit of Rs 85.72 crore, compared to a year-earlier loss of Rs 92.2 crore.

Online ticket bookings played a pivotal role in the turnaround, comprising 63% of the total operating revenue. Income from online ticket bookings climbed to Rs 613 crore in FY23, from Rs 218 crore in FY22.

The sharp improvement in performance is mainly because of consumers returning outdoors for movies and other events after the pandemic. During FY21, when outdoor events and movie halls largely remained shut, BookMyShow had laid off as many as 470 employees in two batches in response to the standstill in business.

Furthermore, diverse revenue streams such as advertising, streaming, food and beverage sales, and other non-operating income contributed to the overall revenue, which soared to Rs 1,026 crore in FY23 from Rs 302 crore in FY22.

Notable components contributing to this increase include a revenue share, with cinema owners receiving Rs 295 crore as commission for movies, and artist fees for live events reaching Rs 104 crore.

Additionally, payment gateway charges, production expenses, employee benefits, and food and beverage expenses, among others, contributed to the overall increase in the company’s expenditure.

BookMyShow, which is backed by Reliance Industries’ Network18 and Accel, counts Paytm Insider as its key rival in the movie and events ticketing space. Food and grocery delivery platform Zomato, a new entrant in the live events booking segment, for the first time, reported metrics for its going-out business in November.

The Gurugram-based company reported that its going-out business, which includes dining out and events, reported a revenue of Rs 49 crore for the September quarter, an 88% year-on-year growth.
