BYD Atto 3 electric SUV spotted testing before official launch in India

Chinese automaker Build Your Dreams (BYD) debuted in the Indian passenger vehicle segment with the e6 all-electric MPV. However, the brand is all set to strengthen its position in the electric mobility category with its next offering for India, the Atto 3 midsize electric SUV. The BYD Atto 3 was recently spied in fully uncovered guise on the Indian roads, which indicates that the electric SUV is undergoing trial runs in India ahead of its launch.

The BYD Atto 3 seen testing on the Indian soil is finished in a shade of metallic silver and looks the same as the global-spec version. The Atto3 is expected to be launched in a single fully-loaded trim, which was the one spied on test near BYD’s manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. Like the e6, the Atto3 will also be made using semi-knocked down (SKD) kits at its Indian manufacturing facility.

The model seen on the test gets all the features of the global-spec model, such as all-LED headlamps and tail lamps, 18-inch machined alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a closed grille at the front with chrome garnish. While the interior of the SUV couldn’t be seen, expect the SUV to get features like a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, full-TFT instrument console, ambient lighting and a powered driver’s seat. It is also expected to get plenty of safety features, such as ADAS, seven airbags, a 360-degree parking camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Two battery packs are available

Measuring 4455mm long and 1875mm wide, the BYD Atto 3 will come in as a front-wheel drive SUV, with an electric motor mounted on the front axle. This permanent magnet synchronous motor produces 204 bhp of maximum power and 310 Nm of maximum torque in the global-spec version, and the India-spec model is expected to claim the same.

Globally, the BYD Atto 3 is available with two battery configuration options – 49.2 kWh and 60.48 kWh, though the India-spec model will likely get the latter option. The 60.48 kWh battery pack claims a maximum driving range of 420 km (WLTP-certified) and features a patented Blade Battery Technology. The battery can be charged using up to 80 kW DC fast charging options, apart from standard 3-pin AC and Type-2 AC chargers.

The only variant of the BYD Atto 3 expected to arrive in India will be priced in the range of Rs 25-30 lakh, which makes it a direct competitor to the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona EV.
