CEO Rajesh Jejurikar reveals launch timeline

The lifestyle off-roader, Thar, from the country’s largest SUV manufacturer, Mahindra, is currently one of the most popular SUVs in the country, despite being in the market for a little under three years. The company has been selling this SUV like hotcakes, and with the introduction of the two-wheel drive models, it has gained another dimension of popularity in India. Additionally, the company is also working on a much more practical five-door version of this SUV. Test mules of it have been spotted on multiple occasions. It was anticipated that the five-door Thar would make its official debut this year; however, the company CEO has now announced that it will not be launched this year but instead in the following year.

During the annual results announcement of the company, the CEO stated, “Our five-door Thar is a highly anticipated product. It’s not coming in this calendar year, as many people are speculating. It’s a 2024 [calendar year] launch.” He further added, “We already have a lot of demand coming from the launch of the rear-wheel drive Thar, which has received more than 50,000 bookings. Right now, we want to try and get that under control. The waiting period for that has gone up dramatically. So we need to ramp that up, and now we’re looking at the Thar 5-door coming in 2024.”

From the announcement, it is clear that the company first wants to fulfill all the pending orders before launching the new five-door iteration of the Thar. During the announcement, it was stated that there would be no new launches from the company for the rest of 2023. Since the launch of the two-wheel drive variants, the Thar has seen a spike in sales and reservations. Currently, some of the variants of the three-door model have waiting periods of more than a year and a half.

Regarding the Thar five-door, recently, another test mule of the SUV was spotted testing in the wild, and a top view shot of this particular test mule revealed that the top-spec variants of this forthcoming SUV will come equipped with a sunroof. The electric sunroof in the five-door Thar will be a single pane electric sunroof unit, not a panoramic unit. Nonetheless, it will be helpful for boosting sales, as sunroofs have become one of the most sought-after features in modern cars in the country.

It was recently reported that the five-door Thar will retain the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines from the Thar three-door. Both engines will be available with manual and automatic transmissions. Furthermore, previous spy shots also showed that there was no 4×4 lever on the center console, indicating that a Thar 5-door 4×2, equipped with both petrol and diesel engines, is also in the works.

Reportedly, Mahindra is developing the 2WD five-door Thar to compete with the recently unveiled Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The company plans to target a bigger practical vehicle segment with this 2WD Thar. Reports have also claimed that Mahindra will be tuning the Thar five-door’s engine similar to the recently released Scorpio-N to give it a boost in power and performance.
