Depp credits Pacino for Modigliani film

Johnny Depp is thankful to Al Pacino for getting him to helm Modi, over 25 years since his feature debut, Brave (1997). The story takes place over two days in the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, played by Riccardo Scamarcio, amid the backdrop of World War I in Paris. This film comes barely a couple of years since Depp’s legal win in his 2022 defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The Professor actor, 60, said in a recent interview that Pacino, who plays French art collector Maurice Gangnat in Modi, “requested” that he make the film. “How could I refuse Pacino?” wondered Depp, who co-starred with the legendary actor in the American crime drama, Donnie Brasco (1997). He thanked Pacino, 83, “for generously contributing his talent and dedication to this project,” which was filmed in Budapest, Hungary.

“Embarking on this cinematic journey as the director of Modi has been an incredibly fulfilling and transformative experience,” he said. “I’d like to express my profound gratitude to the entire cast, crew, and producers for their unwavering commitment and creativity.” Calling the film “a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking,” Depp added, “I am excited to present this unique and compelling story to the world.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s roles have been few and far between since Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed, in which she referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”
