Ford to trial FCEV Transit in UK

Ford UK plans a three year trial of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the electric Transit van.

The project, part funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), aims to determine whether the “technology can deliver more zero emission range to heavy use customers”.

Ford will work with various companies including fuel cell powertrain specialists and fleet operators such as Ocado Retail.

Others include BP capturing hydrogen usage and infrastructure; Cambustion, for fuel cell systems testing; Viritech, for storage systems; and Cygnet Texikimp to provide the pressure vessels’ carbon fibre tooling.

The test fleet is eight vans that will run for six months at a time over a three year period up to 2025.

Each prototype will include a fuel cell system and hydrogen storage capability.

Additional research will include the best measures for recycling old components.
