Former Billionaire Anil Ambani Seen Being Driven In A “Humble” Hyundai Ioniq 5 Electric SUV

Renowned businessman Anil Ambani might not be having the best of his times, with losses reported by his companies and legal cases mounting on him. Once an affluent businessman who ranked high in India in terms of net worth, Anil Ambani now ranks much behind his elder brother Mukesh Ambani. In one of his recent public appearances, Anil Ambani was seen chauffeured in a Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is a stark contrast to the luxury cars in which the businessman was once seen.

In an Instagram video which has been going viral, Anil Ambani is seen being driven out of a private airport in a black-coloured Hyundai Ioniq 5. The businessman had just arrived after attending the inaugural ceremony of the newly-constructed temple in Ayodhya and was seen leaving the airport in the Ioniq 5. While leaving the airport, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, in which Anil Ambani was seated beside his driver at the front, was swarmed by photographers and paparazzi, who were present there to catch a glimpse of him.

While the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is not an affordable and budget-oriented car by any standards, given its premium price positioning, it is nowhere close to the luxury cars in which Anil Ambani was once seen a few years ago. The businessman has owned range-topping luxury vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Land Rover Range Rover Vogue, Lamborghini Gallardo and Rolls-Royce Phantom. However, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, in which Anil Ambani was recently seen, costs a fraction of the said luxury cars.

This was the first time that Anil Ambani was seen in his new Hyundai Ioniq 5. One of the most awarded cars globally, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 made its first public appearance in India during the Auto Expo 2023. Hyundai then launched the Ioniq 5 at an introductory starting price of Rs 44.95 lakh for the first 500 customers, which then shot up to Rs 46.05 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Hyundai has been locally assembling the Ioniq 5 at its production facility in India, which is the reason behind its significantly lower price compared to the CBU offering Kia EV6, an all-electric car with which it shares its platform. For the Indian car market, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is sold exclusively as a rear-wheel drive vehicle, with the rear-mounted electric motor generating 215 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque. The 72.6kWh battery pack of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 claims a 631 km range.

On the other hand, the Mukesh Ambani family owns a privately imported Tesla, the Model S 100D. This Tesla model is a powerhouse with electric motors generating a maximum of 423 PS of power and a massive 660 Nm torque. The power is distributed to all the wheels, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. The Model S 100D has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h and offers a maximum range of 495 km on a single full charge.

Equipped with a 100 kWh battery, the Model S 100D can be fast-charged in just 42 minutes, providing a range of 396 km. In the USA, the car is priced at $99,990, roughly translating to around Rs 73 lakhs. After importing the vehicle to India and paying the import tax of more than 100%, the cost would be approximately Rs 1.5 crores. This estimate does not include registration costs and insurance. Given its electric nature, it’s possible that the new government policy promoting EV vehicles exempted the car from registration fees.
