Google Colab gets new AI-powered coding chatbot

Google is expanding Bard‘s AI coding capabilities to Google Colab, its cloud-based Python development environment.

Colab is getting a chatbot designed specifically to assist with coding, as well as the ability to generate code using natural language. Google said that these features are made possible through Codey, a generative AI model that focuses on coding and is based on PaLM 2.

During its initial phase, Codey models within Colab will only be accessible to users in the US. Google has announced that the first set of features will concentrate on code generation, which can significantly enhance programming speed, quality, and comprehension. Additionally, this new feature eliminates the need to type the same code repeatedly. Eligible Colab users will soon notice a Generate button and a text prompt box once the feature becomes available.

Google is planning to introduce a new chatbot to Colab in the near future. Although there is no specific timeline available, the chatbot is expected to be launched soon. This chatbot is designed to assist both beginners and professionals by answering basic queries such as “How do I import data from Google Sheets?” and “How do I filter a Pandas DataFrame?” This will further enhance the overall AI experience.

With this new solution, there’s no need to create code on Google’s chatbot and then export it to Colab. However, Google may use any code generated through chatbot prompts to enhance its models.

Colab’s “eligible” paying subscribers will soon benefit from an autocomplete feature that suggests code as they type. This will save time and reduce keystrokes, particularly when dealing with large piles of code.

According to Google, certain features will be released gradually in the upcoming months, starting with users who pay for the service in the US. The company intends to make these features available in other regions eventually, and free Colab subscribers will also receive access at a later time.
