Google Messages could soon bring WhatsApp like message editing feature. Here’s what we know so far

Google is working on a new WhatsApp and iMessage like features for its Messaging app in order to woo more users. The Google Messages app may now be planning to launch a new message editing feature which is currenty in development. However, Google hasn’t yet confirmed if this features will make it to the final version of the app yet.

According to a report by SPAndroid, Google added some flags in the beta version of Google Messages that released in the last week of November. The four flags that were spotted suggest that the Mountain View, California-based company may be going the WhatsApp way with the new editing feature.

However, the leaks do not reveal if Google Messages’ editing feature will have a time frame till which a message can be edited like WhatsApp or iMessage. Moreover, a report by Android Police warns that Google is constantly working on many new features that doesn’t necessary guarantee that this feature will be rolled out to the stable version of the Messages app.

Meta-owned WhatsApp had announced the message editing feature earlier this year in a bid to give more control to users over their chats. WhatsApp users can long press on a message and choose to edit it up to 15 minutes after the message is sent and the changed messages displays the ‘edited’ sign alongside.

Meanwhile, Apple’s iMessage had allowed users to edit their messages till 2 minutes after they have been sent with the iOS 16 operating system release in 2021. Both iMessage and WhatsApp also allow users to delete their messages.

Although, Google has been guilty of neglecting its Messaging app in the past, the Android maker is no mood to make the same mistakes. Google has launched some interesting new featues for Google Messages in the recent past including the new Photomoji feature which allows users to turn pictures in their galleries into stickers using an On Device AI model.
