Google plans to make Pixel phones in India from Q2, 2024: report

Make Pixel in India: Which phone, when, and more details

  • Google is planning to ramp up its production facilities in India by the April-June quarter, according to a report by Nikkei. The company has instructed its suppliers about this.
  • It could start with manufacturing the Pixel 8 Pro somewhere in South India. Later by mid-2024, it is expected to make the Pixel 8 somewhere in North India. The exact location of the sites and other plans are yet to be revealed.
  • It hasn’t disclosed how many units it plans to make or whether these will be sold in India or exported.

Why Google could be making Pixels in India?

  • Google is targeting to sell over 10 million Pixel smartphones in 2024 and the new production plans could be to meet this.
  • Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices and services had announced this last year only at a Google for India event. He called India, “a priority market for Pixel smartphones”.
  • Also, India is majorly an Android market and all those phones run Google’s software. The company sets a standard for this market with the Pixel smartphones. If not for anything else, Google would want to capture the mind share of this market with its Pixel lineup.
  • Apple and Samsung are already making their phones in India. So, now Google also joins the club to diversify its supply chain (away from China) and also to benefit from the government of India’s PLI scheme
