Unlike the Weather app on iOS, there is still no dedicated weather app, and every time one wants to check weather, they are redirected to weather results through the Google app. Now, a report suggests that Google is working on a dedicated Weather app for Android.
9to5Google recently discovered hints within version 7.5 of the Google Clock app, which suggest that there may be a new independent Weather app for Android in the works. The Google Clock app’s code has a reference to a package called “com.google.android.apps.weather.”
The app was released on Wear OS last year, so Android smartphones and tablets may also receive this update soon.
The new feature will work as a separate app for checking weather forecasts and include local weather results in the Clock app for a seamless experience. Some of these details may also be visible on the Clock’s home screen widget.
It is uncertain when the new weather feature will be available to everyone. It is expected that the separate Weather app may be released after the Google Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold arrives in the market, or could be a feature of the upcoming Android 14 update.
The Clock app will provide weather information for each city you have saved, including details such as high and low temperatures and general weather conditions.
According to 9to5Google, the app has added new notifications for weather conditions such as Clear Day, Blizzard, Very Hot, Tropical Storm or Hurricane, Flurries, Low Visibility, and Nighttime Isolated Scattered Thunderstorms. Users can also access a new standalone Weather app by interacting with the weather information on the Clock app.
Recently, Google gave a sneak peek of the redesigned Weather app at I/O. On foldables and tablets, the app will display a two-column layout. The left side will show the location and an 8-day forecast, while the right side will provide more specific details for a chosen day, such as hourly forecasts, wind, humidity, UV index, and sunrise/sunset times.
