Disney is having quite the year.
From fighting political battles with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to conquering the box office with some of the biggest movies of the year, the House of Mouse can’t be stopped. Sadly, only Avatar: The Way of Water has become a global phenomenon. Other films like the live-action The Little Mermaid and MCU movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have fallen short of expectations. Now, it’s up to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Density, which premiered today, to turn things around. Regrettably, the film’s early box office numbers put it less in line with Avatar and more in line with the Warner Bros. failed DCU film The Flash… in more ways than one.
Meanwhile, Disney’s relationship with the LGBTQ+ community saw its latest development today after the animated movie the studio canned years ago and then sold to Netflix finally made its debut. Spoiler: the film is great. Second spoiler: Disney really screwed up this time.
Disney might’ve de-aged Harrison Ford better than Warner Bros. did in The Flash, but it forgot looks aren’t all that matters
When early trailers for Dial of Destiny showed a younger Harrison Ford as Indy, it was only a matter of time before the complaints rolled in. Disney hasn’t had the best track record with its VFX lately. Nevertheless, it wasn’t that the movie messed up Harrison Ford’s face (thankfully), it was more about the fact it forgot voices also need to be de-aged.
Dial of Desity’s saving grace is that it achieved what The Flash could not in terms of de-aging its actors. Unfortunately, its success with de-aging Ford hasn’t translated to a higher return in box office previews. By and large, The Flash has been a box office bomb — so, let’s keep our fingers crossed Indy can cinch a better box office weekend than Barry Allen.
Disney loses out to Netflix in the worst way possible as Nimona debuts with flying colors
Look, sometimes creative projects just don’t pan out. That’s simply the way the entertainment industry operates sometimes. After Disney canned Nimona in 2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it looked as if the LGBTQ+ movie just wasn’t meant to be. But then, quite literally out of nowhere, instead of carrying on after the pandemic died down, Disney shut Blue Sky Studios down and sold the project to Netflix. (Talk about whiplash). The film has since debuted with a stellar 94% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s safe to say Disney royally messed up on this one, and the fans are not shy about calling the studio out on it.

Did we forget Gal Gadot was playing the Evil Queen? Yes. Are we even surprised Disney is making yet another live-action adaptation of one of its most popular animated films of all time? No. Is Gal Gadot ready to eat the part up? You bet your poisonous apple she is. In speaking with Vogue the Wonder Woman actress said, “There was something so delicious with this part because it’s a fairy tale. It’s the first Disney villain. And because it’s a musical, I could stretch my performance and make it so much more dramatic and so much more animated, that it was just simply delightful.”
Not sure we would call yet another live-action Disney remake “delightful,” but hey we’re always open to being proven wrong.
