The masterminds behind the 2023 horror supernova M3GAN are in the final stages of sealing a historic deal. Two powerhouses of horror production – Blumhouse and Atomic Monster – will soon come together to produce the most haunting and twisted terror tales, bringing the best of both worlds.
The maestros behind the two production companies, Jason Blum and James Wan have been regular collaborators on the hit Insidious franchise, but the sinister saga will soon wrap up with The Red Door 13 years after beginning. Before the film’s release on July 7, the two creators overseeing the IP as producers teased the future of their partnership in an interview with DiscussingFilm.
Founder and CEO of Blumhouse, Jason Blum, revealed that the “agreement is almost done. It’s almost official,” and expressed his excitement about the two working together on new projects. He emphasized that the success of their previous collaborations gives him hope for their next joint ventures:
“It’s not new for us, you know? We collaborated on M3GAN, and we’ve collaborated on all these Insidious movies. The results of our collaborations, I should say, have been very positive.”
The news of Blumhouse and Wan’s Atomic Monster merging hit the internet in Sept. 2022 and took horror fans by surprise and excitement. Commenting on how the partnership will benefit fans, Blum promised they’ll be the real winners.
“For the fans, I think the good news is, instead of one movie every couple of years, it’ll be (new movies) every year. Some movies will be more Atomic Monster, some movies will be more Blumhouse. But both of the company’s DNA will be in all of our movies. I think that will, ultimately, make for better movies for the fans and more of them.”
Echoing his sentiments, Wan reiterated how the partnership will allow them “to potentially put out more projects,”
“we have so many projects that we’re super excited about but we just don’t always have all the resources to put them out there. By coming together, however, we can do that and we can get more products out there that we really believe in and that we think fans will be passionate about as well.”
The long-running partnership between horror’s most revered creators may be coming to an end with the fifth and final installment of the Insidious franchise, but the merger guarantees that more Blumhouse and Atomic Monster content will be released on screens sooner than we anticipate.
In an unexpected turn of events, Blum also talked about the possibility of more Insidious films, saying “It may not be a forever rest”:
“The Red Door is going to be the last we’re going to see of Insidious for a while. It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. So, if someone comes up with some idea in 10 years, who knows? But there’s not a plan – as there has been with every prior Insidious movie – there’s no current plan in place for number six.”
Currently, fans will get to see more of Blumhouse’s with the Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation releasing on Oct. 27, 2023, and get a treat of Wan reuniting with DC on December 25, 2023 when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom lands.
