Mahindra Thar 4X4 SUV’s five-door global debut to be held on August 15 in South Africa

It is a well-known fact that Mahindra, the country’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer, is gearing up to launch a more practical 5-door iteration of its highly popular lifestyle off-roader, the Thar. This move is an attempt to attract more buyers who are now leaning towards the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Further advancements regarding the launch of the new Mahindra Thar 5-door reveal that the company will unveil this new variant on August 15th of this year. The global debut of this model will take place in South Africa. It’s worth noting that the current generation 3-door Thar was also launched on August 15th, 2020, and has since remained one of the company’s most popular SUVs in the country.

It should be noted that the company plans to unveil the new Thar 5-door in Africa, with the launch scheduled for next year. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto & Farm Sector) at Mahindra & Mahindra, recently stated that there will be no launches this calendar year. During the company’s annual results announcement, the CEO stated, “Our 5-door Thar is a highly anticipated product. Contrary to speculation, it will not be released this calendar year. It is scheduled for a 2024 launch.” He further added, “We already have a high demand for the rear-wheel drive Thar, which has received over 50,000 bookings. Currently, we need to focus on meeting that demand, as the waiting period has significantly increased. Therefore, we aim to ramp up production and plan to introduce the Thar 5-door in 2024.”

Regarding the Thar 5-door, a recent sighting of another test mule revealed that top-spec models of this upcoming SUV will be equipped with a sunroof. However, it will feature a single-pane electric sunroof instead of a panoramic one. Sunroofs have become one of the most desired features in contemporary automobiles, and this addition is expected to boost sales. Apart from this most of the car will remain the same as the three door Thar with the exception of an elongated wheelbase and a pair of extra doors in the middle to better suit the practicality of Indian buyers.

According to recent reports, the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines from the Thar 3-door will also be available in the 5-door Thar. Both manual and automated gearboxes will be compatible with these engines. Additionally, previous spy photos showed that the center console lacked a 4×4 lever, indicating that a 4×2 Thar 5-door with both petrol and diesel engines is also in the works.

Some sources have also reported that Mahindra is developing a 2WD version of the 5-door Thar to compete with the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Jimny. With this 2WD Thar, the company aims to target a larger practical car segment. Reports suggest that Mahindra will tune the Thar 5-door’s engine, similar to the newly announced Scorpio-N, to enhance power and performance.
