The inclusion of Toyota Hilux in the Punjab Police fleet has been done for the newly-established Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF) in Punjab. The new SSF wing of Punjab Police has received around 121 units of Toyota Hilux for patrolling purposes throughout the state.
According to Punjab Police, the new SSF wing will be having 1,500 specially-trained police officers to promote and encourage road safety across the state. The newly-inducted Toyota Hilux pickups will be used by this newly-made wing, with each of the Hilux to be deployed and used at 30 km intervals across the state of Punjab for stricter following of road safety rules.

In this video, it can be seen that all the Hilux pickups have customized Punjab Police livery along with authorized sirens. This is the first time the Toyota Hilux has been included in a police fleet in India. The Punjab Police has been using Mahindra Boleros and Scorpios for patrolling, though the Toyota Hilux will be used exclusively by the SSF wing of the Punjab Police.
However, it is not the first time that the Hilux has been preferred by a government agency. In 2023, the Indian Army did include a batch of specially-developed Toyota Hilux for border areas, where the pickup is an effortless vehicle to drive in adverse tarmac conditions. Apart from the Hilux, the Indian Army has been using heavily customised Tata Safari Storme and Mahindra Scorpio Classic SUVs, along with previous-generation Maruti Suzuki Gypsys. All these utility vehicles are ladder-on-frame vehicles, which are more durable and rugged to use in adverse driving conditions.
The Toyota Hilux has been on sale in the Indian car market since the beginning of 2022. The pickup truck is being sold in two variants – Mid and High, both of which come with a 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine as standard. The diesel engine, which can produce a maximum power output of 204 PS and a peak torque output of 500 Nm, has been shared with the Fortuner SUV, with which it also shares its ladder-on-frame platform. The engine is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, though the pickup can also be had with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Toyota offered massive discounts on Hilux
Last year, Toyota had offered significant discounts on its vehicles, and that rare opportunity had just hit the market with the Hilux. According to a report, the Toyota Hilux was being offered lucrative discounts of more than Rs 6 lakh on the Hilux lifestyle pickup truck.
The lifestyle pickup truck is assembled here in India with 30-35 per cent localisation levels. With the price corrections, the entry-level Standard MT variant’s price dropped by Rs 3.59 lakh, resulting in a lower entry pricing of Rs 30.40 lakh. On the other hand, Toyota had hiked the prices of the more premium High variant, which was available with both manual and automatic transmission options.
While the price of the manual went up by Rs 1.35 lakh, that of the automatic variant received a hike of Rs 1.10 lakh. With these hikes, the revised prices of the High variant were Rs 37.15 lakh for the manual and Rs 37.90 lakh for the automatic version.
