Netflix Finally Unveils a Release Date for Idris Elba’s ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’

There’s some good news today for fans of one of Idris Elba’s most iconic roles as Netflix finally announced the new Luther movie, called Luther: The Fallen Sun. The movie will get a dual release: in theaters the end of Feb. and on Netflix in March.

Luther was a psychological crime thriller that ran for five seasons from 2010 to 2019, and featured Elba as a grizzled detective. The last time we saw Luther he was in a jail cell, and this one picks up right where the last one left off.

Netflix tweeted out the news along with a mysterious teaser.

Here’s the synopsis:

“In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary. The film also stars Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk.”

According to JoBlo.com, Elba recently commented on the state of his character. “He’s done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he’s ended up in jail. So that’s where we start the story. He’s contemplating what he’s going to do with his life.”

Director Jamie Payne said it wasn’t necessary to watch the series first to enjoy the movie.

“But because the film has got such a larger platform, we thought it was important that if someone was watching the film for the first time that it had its own story. So you could watch the film and go back and then binge the series.”

Luther: The Fallen Son will be available in select theaters on Feb. 24 and on Netflix March 10.
