New variants of the Toyota Hyryder Urban Cruiser compact SUV

In October 2022, Toyota will announce new variants of the Hyryder Urban Cruiser and their prices. While the Japanese automaker launched the Hyryder Urban Cruiser before the Maruti Grand Vitara – its badge-engineered sibling – it didn’t reveal the full range of the former. Prices of most mild hybrid trims of the Hyryder Urban Cruiser were held back. Notably, Maruti Suzuki will announce prices of the Grand Vitara later today, and all variants of the compact SUV are likely to be launched at the same time.

Coming back to the Hyryder Urban Cruiser, the mild hybrid trims of this compact SUV will share the 1.5 liter K15C petrol engine with the Grand Vitara. Even the mild hybrid unit – SHVS – will be borrowed from Maruti Suzuki. The engine makes 102 BHp-137 Nm, and gets two gearbox options: a 5 speed manual and a 6 speed torque converter automatic.

All wheel drive option

There’s an optional all wheel drive (AWD) layout offered with the manual trims of this engine. The all wheel drive layout is a best-in-class feature across the Hyryder and Grand Vitara, and no other compact SUV sold in India offers this. The all wheel drive layout – called AllGrip by Suzuki – offers four modes: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock. Hill descent control is also standard on the AWD trim. Toyota will sell the mild hybrid variants of the Hyryder Urban Cruiser in four trims: E,S,G and V.

As of now, Toyota sells the Hyryder Strong Hybrid in S, G and V trims, with prices starting from Rs. 15.11 lakh. By introducing the full range of mild hybrid trims, Toyota will make the Hyryder’s starting price a lot lower, and this should make the compact SUV a lot more attractive to prospective buyers. While high fuel efficiency of abut 28 Kmpl is the key highlight of the strong hybrid Hyryder variants, affordable prices will be he main selling point of the mild hybrid variants. Also, off road enthusiasts get to opt for the all wheel drive feature, and this makes the Hyryder quite a capable SUV.

Strong hybrid future for both Maruti and Toyota

Both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are betting big on strong hybrid powertrains as an alternative to diesel engines in their new cars. Strong hybrid powertrains are likely to percolate to more affordable Maruti and Toyota cars including hatchbacks. Strong Hybrids offer diesel-beating mileage while being much more cleaner in terms of tail pipe emissions. They’re also seen as a bridge between internal combustion engines (ICE) and full-electrics. Maruti Suzuki has also declared that it will launch more CNG powered cars.
