ONDC: ONDC crosses record 5.5 million transactions in December


The government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) crossed 5.5 million transactions in December, the highest so far in a month since inception.

In January last year, ONDC had recorded 2,000 orders.

Of the 5.5 million transactions made via ONDC in December, 3.4 million (63%) were in the mobility category while two million (37%) were in the retail category.

Within the retail category, food and beverages accounted for 32.5% of the orders, followed by fashion (29.6%), with the remaining transactions spread across categories such as home and kitchen (12.6%), grocery (10.1%), beauty and personal care (8.5%), and electronics (5.7%). ONDC’s highest single-day orders so far have been about 217,000.

ONDC chief Thampy Koshy did not comment on the matter.

The network aims to facilitate 6.5 million to seven million transactions by the end of March, said people privy to the information. The numbers are not surprising, they said, as apart from Juspay’s Namma Yatri in Bengaluru, Yaary in Hyderabad and Webel in West Bengal also contributed to the 3,466,000 mobility orders.

Monthly ecommerce purchases topped 1.5 million in November on ONDC. The network is aiming for up to eight million monthly transactions towards the end of this year. It has already seen a peak of about 95,000 retail orders in a day.

The network also hopes to increase ecommerce penetration in the country to 25% in the next two years and reach a gross merchandise value of $48 billion. Currently, the network has about 40,000 sellers who are live in around 200 cities.

Magicpin, uEngage, GrowthFalcons, bitsila and EkSecond are the main food seller apps on the network.

Buyer apps currently live on the network include Paytm, Pincode, MagicPin, Mystore, Ola, Namma Yatri, SpiceMoney, NoBrokerhood, Craftsvilla, Airpay, Meesho and, on the business-to-business front, Rapidor and Signcatch.
