Orbs Taps TON As Its First Non-EVM L1 Expansion Objective

Orbs has always been on a mission to expand its network and empower developers across blockchains. The industry needs better protocols and products without compromising decentralization, although many builders see it as a necessary trade-off. With Orbs now expanding to The Open Network (TON), the blockchain industry inches closer to mass adoption.

Orbs Continues to Expand

There are many ways for the blockchain industry to reach critical mass. While there is no shortage of innovative products and services today, most lack the necessary decentralization. That is not due to lacking infrastructure per se, although the Orbs technology stack is a welcome addition. Operating between layer-1/layer-2 solutions and the application helps enhance the existing technology to provide a stronger foundation to build on.

Furthermore, the ongoing expansion of Orbs has brought the Ethereum Virtual Machine’s capacities to new heights. In addition, its L3 solution is found on Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Fantom, and now The Open Network (TON). It is a logical step in the ongoing expansion and gives TON developers more options to enhance their products, services, and applications.

Furthermore, the expansion to TON is a key approach for Orbs to bring blockchain technology to billions of users. Building on top of Ethereum will always remain crucial, but it is not the only capable blockchain network. Nor are the other EVM-compatible networks, as TON – initially backed by Telegram before taken over by the open-source community – can become a tremendous user base.

However, the Orbs team keeps close tabs on Facebook’s Diem, too. Facebook remains the largest social network, and all of its products and services are embraced by the mainstream. As a result, Diem, and its associated blockchain technology, could benefit from Orbs’ stack to build new user-oriented projects and services. For now, the primary focus goes to TON, as it has the most potential to catalyze mainstream blockchain adoption.

Unlocking The Potential of TON

It is the first time the Orbs team has built on a non-EVM layer-1 technology stack. Although TON has just started to emerge, there is untapped potential. However, unlocking that potential requires maturity and better infrastructure to execute new ideas. Moreover, Orbs becomes a key TON ecosystem participant, directly helping network protocols to tap into L3 use-cases and opportunities. With over 1 million active wallets on TON to date, the network is off to a good start.

The early-mover momentum propelling Orbs forward can position it as a TON-based leader and powerhouse. It all comes down to whether The Open Network can generate sufficient traction and how developers will explore the new L3 options at their disposal. Bitcoin was the first layer-1 cryptocurrency, Ethereum is the first layer-1 blockchain application network, and TON can become an entirely different “first” layer-1 solution with the help of Orbs and other participants.
