Portrait photos captured using Samsung Galaxy S24 look more natural

Samsung might not have changed the designs of its new phones, but it has still managed to improve many things that actually make a difference in everyday life. It made the screens brighter, improved the battery life, and managed to up the camera quality despite largely using the same cameras as last year. One such change is related to the quality of portrait shots from the camera.

Galaxy S24 uses improved AI algorithms for a more natural-looking blur effect

According to Samsung, the Galaxy S24 captures more natural-looking portraits. On its Community Forum website, the company’s engineers explained how they improved portrait shots. Apparently, the Galaxy S24 uses improved AI processing power of its processor to detect subjects and increase the depth effect. Moreover, it also helps in applying a blur effect on the things that are in front of the main subject. This makes the image look like it was captured using a DSLR camera. Earlier, the blur effect was applied only to the things that are behind the subject.

As you can see in the images above, the food placed in front of the subject is blurred along with the background in the image. In the second image, the two women in the front appear blurred, and the focus is on the two subjects in the rear. This dual-blur effect makes images look more natural.

Portrait videos from Galaxy S24 have improved AI model, stabilization, and zoom

Samsung also claims that it has improved the quality of portrait videos. Last year, the company increased the resolution of portrait videos to 4K and the frame rate to 30fps. This year, the company is using two cameras on the Galaxy S24 Ultra to measure the distance between the subject and the background, which makes it easier to apply a natural-looking blur effect. The company has also improved the AI model and the stabilization quality. There is also an option to use continuous zoom from 1x to 3x while capturing portrait videos using the Galaxy S24.
