Reddit tests a verification mark for officials among other accessibility features

After a plethora of social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, Reddit is planning its verification system to put an ‘official’ badge in front of users who have confirmed their identity.

The social media-cum-disucssion forum said it is currently conducting a test with a limited number of profiles to verify authenticity. Only a few organisations with pre-existing relations with the site have received the new ‘official’ label.

“This is currently only available to a *very* small (double-digit) number of profiles belonging to organisations with whom we already have existing relationships, and who are interested in engaging with Redditors and communities on our platform,” the company said in a post.

Unlike Twitter’s Blue subscription and Meta Verified for Insgtam and Facebook, Reddit’s official label will not offer any extra benefits to verified accounts, confirmed the company. The company did not tell whether there will be any application process or if the users would have to pay for the verification.

According to Reddit, this label is intended to assist moderators and users in promptly recognising these organisations. It also allows them to have faith that these users are genuine. Reddit’s primary aim is to investigate methods to promote genuine interaction between organisations and users.

The ‘official’ badge is currently only visible to users on iOS and Android apps.

A Reddit administrator notes that it is important to distinguish the official label from the Promoted label. The official label is not to be confused with the Promoted label, which is used for paid advertisements.

In the same post, the company highlights the new accessibility changes that have been rolled out to the platform.

Reddit has tweaked the notification systems by implementing Automod to run before post, and how comment reply notifications are sent, including push and email notifications. This change is being rolled out gradually over the next few weeks, and should enhance the user experience on the platform, said the company.

By conducting content checks before sending notifications, Reddit says it can prevent users from seeing content that has been removed by Automod.
