With car manufacturers across the globe rapidly electrifying their lineups, demand for batteries has gone through the roof. Samsung SDI, the battery making company of the Samsung Group, has been investing heavily in its manufacturing facilities to cater to this demand.
Samsung SDI is also focusing on improving battery technology in order to provide next-generation battery products for electric vehicles, as demand shows no signs of slowing down. Samsung’s focus now is on mass producing all solid state batteries (ASBs) by 2027.
Samsung is ramping up to cater to EV battery demand
ASBs are widely considered to be a safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries that are fire-prone. These next-gen batteries have a filling of solid electrolyte which reduces fire risk and also improves driving range. Samsung SDI talked about its aim to mass product ASBs by 2027 at InterBattery 2024, a local battery exhibition in South Korea.
Samsung SDI Chief Executive Choi Yoon-ho said that the company’s preparations for manufacturing these batteries are well underway, and that Samsung SDI is well set to lead the global battery market with its technological superiority.
The company set up its pilot production line for ASBs last year. It has the industry-highest density of 900 watt-hours per liter. Prototype samples are currently being produced at this facility located in Samsung SDI’s R&D center in Suwon, just outside Seoul.
This isn’t the only advanced battery technology that the company is working on. Samsung SDI also spoke about plans to produce a battery solution that can last over 20 years by 2029.
