Four years ago, Samsung unveiled its first MicroLED TVs. Back then, those TVs were recommended for businesses, and the consumer versions of those TVs were released a year later. Over the past couple of years, Samsung has managed to bring down the prices and sizes of MicroLED TVs.
It is now being reported by TheElec that Samsung has started the mass production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs, and we can expect those TVs to launch later this year or early next year. The new report also claims that Samsung is using LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) glass substrates instead of the printed circuit boards to make its new MicroLED TVs. This new method is expected to bring down the size of pixels and the overall price of the TV.
Samsung was expected to start the mass production of 101-inch and 114-inch MicroLED TVs, but that has been delayed for reasons unknown. The South Korean firm was initially expected to start the production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs in May 2022, but the plan was postponed due to supply chain issues and low yield rates. The upcoming MicroLED TVs from Samsung reportedly use 34µm x85µm LED chips from Taiwanese firm PlayNitride.
MicroLED TVs are similar to OLED TVs in way that each pixel offers its own light and color, but the material is not made using an organic material. So, MicroLED TVs have the image quality of OLEDs and brightness and long lifespan of LCDs. However, with current technology, it is hard to make 4K MicroLED TVs smaller than 89 inches, which means lower pixel density and sharpness than current LCD and OLED TVs. Plus, they are incredibly hard to make, which results in eye-watering price tags.
In the future, when the MicroLED technology gets mature enough, it is expected to replace both LCD and OLED. Currently, Samsung sells modular MicroLED TVs for business and pre-assembled MicroLED TVs for consumers.
