Sebastián Yatra Will Sponsor 2024 Latin Grammy ‘Prodigy’ Scholarship

Sebastián Yatra will be helping a student at Berklee make their scholarly dreams come true. On Thursday, the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation announced that the Dharma singer will present their annual Prodigy Scholarship to a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Berklee College of Music next fall.

“Joining the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation for their annual Prodigy Scholarship is beautiful because I’m part of something that I would’ve wished for as a young kid,” Yatra said in a statement. “One of my big dreams was to study music at Berklee and although my career took a different path which I’m super grateful for, I would’ve loved to have that kind of preparation and knowledge.”

The honoree for this specific award will receive up to $200,000 in financial aid. There are also three other scholarships available: Three students pursuing a degree in music will receive the Gifted Tuition Scholarship of up to $100,000 to cover tuition costs at any college; three students pursuing music education with a focus on electric or acoustic guitar will receive up to $10,000 and a Gibson guitar; and a whopping 37 students will be honored with a Tuition Assistance Scholarship, a one-time award of up to $10,000 that covers tuition costs over one year.

“I hope that the person who gets this opportunity takes full advantage of the scholarship and enjoys it to the max,” Yatra added. “I’ll be looking out for applicants that share a lot of heart and sincerity in their art.”

Applications for the scholarships run from Dec. 14 through April 10. Students interested in earning the awards must submit two audition videos, two letters of recommendation, two essays, and an acceptance letter.

“Our scholarships provide more than just funds for college tuition,” said Raquel Egusquiza, Executive Director of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation. “The ongoing support we receive from artists such as Sebastián Yatra and our generous sponsors allows us to take it a step further and create meaningful educational and mentoring opportunities for the next generation of Latin music creators.”

Last year’s scholarship was sponsored by Nicky Jam, while the 2022 award was presented by Sofia Carson. Juanes sponsored it in 2021. The LGCF has awarded 383 scholarships, amounting to a more than $7.5 million in the last nine years.
