Sharon Stone is looking back at how much her career exploded following 1992’s Basic Instinct, so much so that she said police came to protect her during the infamous O.J. Simpson car chase.
While Stone had no connection to Simpson, who was accused of double murder, she told InStyle magazine, in an interview published online Tuesday, that the Los Angeles Police Department told her, “He’s dangerous. And we don’t know how dangerous, and we don’t know what this is.”
When officers came to her house and told her she had 10 minutes to pack a suitcase to leave, the actress admitted that she didn’t even question it because her life had become so chaotic at the time amid the success of Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 film.
Stone recalled being moved into a hotel as one officer kept watch near the reception area while another stood at her door, all while “O.J. was driving up and down the fucking freeway.” She even said the LAPD told her she couldn’t return to her home and needed to “find a secure house behind a gate” for safety.
But Stone confessed that having to buy a new house and hire security, as well as everything else that comes with fame in Hollywood, was difficult for her.
“It’s very expensive to be famous,” the actress said. “You go out to dinner, and there’s 15 people at the table, and who gets the check? You get the $3,000 dinner check every single time.”
Decades later, Stone now said she has a better grasp on the expectations of fame in Hollywood.
“At least now [people] understand that Jennifer Lawrence can’t just skip onto an airplane,” she told the magazine. “Nicole Kidman can’t jump onto Delta. Sharon Stone can’t do it either, whether or not she’s doing a lot of movies. [People] think, ‘What have you been in?’ And it’s like, dude, they know me in the Amazon rainforest. It’s tampons, Q-tips and Sharon Stone.”
Stone has previously opened up about how the fallout of starring in Basic Instinct stretched into her personal life. Last year, she said on iHeartRadio’s Table for Two podcast that her brief nude scene in the movie was used against her in court by the judge overseeing her adopted son’s custody case
“When the judge asked my child — my tiny little boy, ‘Do you know your mother makes sex movies?’ Like, this kind of abuse by the system — that I was considered what kind of parent I was because I made that movie,” Stone recalled. The actress said she “lost custody of my child” as a result.
