Tata Altroz and Punch CNG revealed officially; Price announcement soon


Alongside the starry launches like Harrier EV, Curvv ICE concept, Sierra EV and Avinya EV concept, Tata Motors also showcased the CNG-powered versions of its popular compact offerings, Punch and Altroz. Tata Motors has confirmed that the Punch CNG and Altroz CNG will go on sale in India later this year. With these new offerings, the i-CNG lineup of vehicles from Tata Motors has expanded in India, with the previous offerings including Tiago i-CNG and Tigor i-CNG. Like the previous i-CNG offerings, both the Punch CNG and Altroz CNG will come with a factory-fitted CNG kit, but in an all-new arrangement.

The Punch CNG and Altroz CNG will come with a factory-fitted CNG kit for the 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine, and for now, it has been showcased only with the 5-speed manual gearbox. In these CNG versions, the powertrain in both the vehicles claims 77 bhp of power and 97 Nm of torque, lower than 86 bhp of power and 113 Nm of torque in their standard petrol versions. The Punch CNG and Altroz CNG can be started directly in the CNG mode, just like the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG.

In both these newly-unveiled vehicles, there is a new dual-cylinder setup for storing CNG, which has been repositioned beneath the boot. Both these tanks have a storage capacity of 30 litres each and are placed beneath their boot floor, thus eliminating the possibility of one large CNG tank taking up the entire boot space. With this unique arrangement, Tata Motors has ensured that the boot compartment in both these vehicles can be used practically, just like in their petrol-powered versions.

No change in cabin

Both the Punch CNG and Altroz CNG get no changes to their exterior and interior over their petrol-powered counterparts, save for the i-CNG badge on their boot lids. Both these vehicles come decently equipped with features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, halogen projector headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, a push start-stop button, a digital instrument console and a voice-activated sunroof. The Altroz CNG gets additional features like leather upholstery, rear AC vents, a rear armrest and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.

While the Tata Altroz CNG will directly take on its rivals like Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG and Toyota Glanza CNG, the Tata Punch CNG is currently not having any direct rival and is a unique proposition in the niche CNG-powered sub-compact SUV space. Both these models are set to go on sale in the coming months, offering additional versatility to their existing petrol-powered counterparts.
