‘The Big Lebowski’ Costumes, Storyboards Headed to Auction

The chance to emulate the Dude and abide by the utmost extreme is now up for grabs, with numerous costumes and pieces of ephemera from The Big Lebowski headed to auction next month.

The sale, marking the 25th anniversary of Joel and Ethan Coen’s classic flick, will take place Dec. 16 via Julien’s Auctions. Over 250 items will be up for grabs, including two iconic pieces Jeff Bridges wore as the Dude in the movie: A pair of sunglasses (estimated price $20,000 to $30,000) and the iconic brown bathrobe and white T-shirt ensemble (estimated price $30,000 to $50,000).

The vast majority of the lots in the Lebowski auction will be individual pages taken from the film’s storyboard (expected to fetch about $500 to $700 each). The Lebowski storyboard was designed by J. Todd Anderson, who’s worked closely with Coens on pretty much all their films since Raising Arizona. While storyboards are an important part of any production process, the Coens and Anderson have long taken the rare step of storyboarding entire movies scene-by-scene.

Anderson drew The Big Lebowski storyboard with brush, pencil, pen, and ink on standard bond paper. Along with the illustrations, the storyboard pages include handwritten text slating scenes (e.g. “Bowling Scene,” “Home Invasion Scene”) as well as typed-out camera instructions.

The Big Lebowski auction has the support of the Dude himself. Bridges filmed a short video promoting the sale, and a portion of proceeds will go to No Kid Hungry, a charity for which the actor is a spokesperson. Bridges also contributed a whole bunch of memorabilia for the sale, autographing and doodling on a bunch of film replica bowling pins (as well as some other collectibles).

“Ahh, The Big Lebowski — that’s gonna be one of my favorite movies of all time, and not just because I’m in it,” Bridges says in the video. “Of course, I’m biased, but c’mon! Lebowski? C’mon, man. The Coen brothers, they know how to make ‘em, man, they make it look so easy.”
