Ubisoft: Ads in Assassin’s Creed: Ubisoft blames ‘technical error’

Game developer Ubisoft released Assassin’s Creed Odessey in 2018. The game is available on multiple platforms including Windows, Xbox and PlayStation. This week some players took to the social discussion platform Reddit to report spotting pop-up ads on Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game (seen by The Verge).

Players reported that a fullscreen pop-up ad appeared while navigating through the map screen. To summarise the general feeling against such pop-up ads in the middle of gameplay, one of the players wrote: “This is disgusting to experience while playing.” The game developer has claimed that an unspecified “technical error” was the reason behind these pop-up ads. Another Reddit user who also saw the ads while playing the game claimed that the intent of adding pop-ups into the middle of a game that the user has paid for is rather “gross”.

What Ubisoft has to say
In a statement to The Verge, Ubisoft spokesperson Fabien Darrigues said: “We have been made aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles. This was the result of a technical error that we addressed as soon as we learned of the issue.”

Gamers annoyed with in-game ads
Microsoft recently used fullscreen Xbox pop-up ads to promote its games. This has annoyed Xbox users as well. However, these ads appeared only when some users booted their Xbox console. Moreover, not everyone complained about getting Microsoft’s ads on their Xbox console.

The ads shown by Microsoft and Ubisoft are very different to the ads that have appeared on game consoles in the past. Titles like Saints Row 2 had ads running on billboards, while multiple EA game titles showed multiple in-game ads in the earlier days.

Fullscreen pop-up ads in the middle of a game aren’t common. The report also didn’t mention whether the pop-up ads in Assassin’s Creed games were supposed to be a limited test that was somehow made public, or if the game maker is actually planning to roll them out.
