US-unlocked Galaxy S23 gets January 2024 security update

Last week, Samsung rolled out the January 2024 security patch to the international variants of the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Now, the company has started rolling out the same security update to the carrier-unlocked variants of the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23 Plus in the US, which carry model numbers SM-S911U1 and SM-916U1 respectively. The update should also roll out for the Galaxy S23 Ultra soon.

The new firmware for the Galaxy S23 carries the version S911U1UES2BWL9 and that for the Galaxy S23 Plus is S916U1UES2BWL9. The January 2024 security patch fixes 75 security flaws. Among those issues, Samsung has marked one as critical, 68 as high-risk, and six as moderate. Your phone should automatically notify you about the update but if it hasn’t, you can check for the new firmware by going to Settings » Software update and clicking on Download and install. You can also download it from our database.

This week Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 series and announced that it will offer seven years of security and OS upgrades to all the devices in the lineup. Many people expected the company to extend that scheme to Galaxy S23 but that, unfortunately, isn’t the case. These phones will get OS updates for four years, which is still great. You might not even be able to enjoy those many updates as might change your phone by then.
