Apple could discontinue iTunes Movies and TV Shows app on Apple TV

0 41

Apple may be discontinuing its iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps on Apple TV, reports 9to5Mac. The latest tvOS beta release candidate (RC) version 17.2, now available to developers, no longer includes the streaming purchases and rentals option. The merging of iTunes apps into the TV app was first reported in October.

The icons for iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows are still visible on the home screen in the firmware of tvOS 17.2. However, these icons will redirect users to the TV app, where the old features will continue to exist. The redirect screen shows a message that says, “iTunes Movies and Your Purchases Have Moved. You can buy or rent movies and find your purchases in the Apple TV App.” The users will have the option to either “Go to the Store” or “Go to Your Purchases” below this message.

The recent change made to the TV app does not affect any essential features as it still allows users to buy, rent, and manage their purchases, just like the iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps. This move is probably aimed at simplifying the user experience and getting rid of the outdated iTunes brand. Additionally, it might encourage more users to subscribe to Apple TV+.

The latest update for Apple’s set-top box has introduced some new features to the TV app. You can now filter the purchased section by genre, and box sets are now available in store listings. Additionally, the app’s sidebar has been redesigned to make navigation easier.

The iTunes Store app on iPhone and iPad is still functional for purchasing movies and TV shows. However, Apple may migrate users to TV app in the future.

The release candidate firmware usually ends up being identical to the public version, which could be released the next week.
