Big stone crushes roof of army Tata Safari; Jammu-Srinagar highway blocked due falling boulders (Video)

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a very important road for the people in the Kashmir Valley, was closed on Monday. The reason for the closure was mudslides and falling rocks at Ramban and Panthyal. This highway is the main way to connect Kashmir with the rest of India. Sources say that the landslide and falling stones and boulders were triggered by non-stop rain in the area.

On April 2, landslides, falling rocks, and big boulders fell on the highway in Ramban district, which stopped traffic for a few hours. An Army SUV was damaged, but luckily, no one was hurt. The parked military Tata Safari was hit by a large stone that bounced its way to it and fell on the roof of the SUV. Thankfully, there were no injuries. In the video, you can see trucks and other vehicles backing away from the falling boulders and panicked people running.

The Jammu and Kashmir traffic police said that the highway was blocked because of rocks falling at Cafeteria-Ramban and Panthyal. On Sunday, falling rocks also caused problems on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Watch the video below in full screen to see the terrifying moment.

After the rocks fell, the highway was closed until workers could clean up the mess. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) sent people and machines to clear the rocks and dirt from the road near the T5 Tunnel.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ramban Mussarat Islam was worried about the safety of people driving on the highway. He asked the NHAI to check the dangerous area and find a way to protect people from falling rocks. He saw videos on social media that showed the danger and wanted to make sure people using the T5 Tunnel were safe.

The DC asked the NHAI to find a solution and make sure the passengers traveling on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the T5 Tunnel would be safe.

The T5 Tunnel (Tube-1) is 880 meters long and opened for traffic on March 16, 2023. It was built to help cars avoid the most dangerous area where rocks often fall at Panthyal.

Falling boulders (or even small stones) are a huge threat while traveling in hilly and mountainous areas. We have seen several videos of vehicles caught in such landslides, where people were injured and even killed. Even a small stone falling from a high hill carries a lot of momentum with it, capable of smashing windshields of vehicles, and there is nothing a driver can do to prevent it. Larger stones and boulders are worse, as they can smash an entire vehicle or even shove it off the highway into gorges by the side of the road.
