The Untold Truth Of Mera

Mera played a small role in the theatrical version of "Justice League," in which she was played by Amber Heard. Mera meets Aquaman for the first time when they're attempting to stop the villain Steppenwolf from obtaining a Mother Box (it's an alien computer, best not to worry about it) kept in Atlantis. Mera is a warrior, a sorceress, and an Atlantean princess, and Heard also looks pretty much identical to the comics version of the character. Her role was expanded a bit in the later Snyder Cut of "Justice…

Will Wakanda Be Overthrown Once Or Twice? (Captain America Spoilers)

| Captain America: Symbol Of Truth is a beautiful comics thanks to R. B. Silva and in his opening issue, Sam Wilson, the new Cap, takes a tour of Harlem, courtesy of writer Tochi Onyebuchi who has written about Harlem plenty in his novels. But there's one scene that really stands out. Symbol Of Truth #1 Wakanda's place in the Marvel Universe is often a tricky one. Isolationist, a monarchy rather than a democracy, it doesn't provide the best example of how things should be done, and makes for a problematic fantasy. But…

Cartoonist Jeffrey Brown Takes On Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

| Two comic worlds collide! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of indie comics' most interesting stories, going from a humble underground strip to one of the world's biggest media franchises, only to then see original co-creator Kevin Eastman return to reboot the comic at IDW Publishing in the 2010s. Now, another indie comics legend gives his take on the Turtles. Check out cartoonist Jeffrey Brown's sketch cover on IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #50 below, where he illustrates a tiny Raphael with a pair of sai…

See Batman’s dinosaur origin story in a preview of DC’s Jurassic League

We are oversaturated with depictions of the infamous murder of Batman’s parents. What was once one of the most iconic sequences in comic book history is now so completely played out that when Matt Reeves’ The Batman declined to rehash it for Warner Bros. new Batman franchise, it was honestly a relief. But I am begging you to look at one more retelling of Batman’s origin story, from the first chapter of Jurassic League, the six-issue miniseries where the Justice League are all dinosaurs that walk like people. Writer…

The Riddler’s new costume is the best and worst yet for Batman comics

The Riddler has gotten a fashion refresh in Detective Comics, and I couldn’t be happier for him. It can be tricky to iterate on the Riddler. Many writers and artists have attempted to modernize the flamboyant, verdantly suited, and nattily-hatted quizzer into something more aligned with modern fashion — both in terms of clothes and the changing vibe of comic book supervillains. He’s been given question-mark scars and scantily clad henchwomen with themed names. Once, he just started wearing black lipstick and a black…

Who are Jake Lockley and Scarlet Scarab in the Moon Knight finale?

Marvel’s latest Disney Plus series, Moon Knight, took its bows with its final episode in classic Marvel fashion: A shocking revelation delivered via credits scene. Also in classic Marvel fashion, Moon Knight’s credits scene opens many more questions than it answers, and its final episode is long on hints and short on concrete resolution. Has Khonshu recovered any of his status among the other gods after being right about Ammit? What’s the status of Marc and Layla’s strained relationship? And what is in store for…

Doctor Strange 2’s two credits scenes, explained

Doctor Strange’s latest adventure is here and, like all Marvel movies, it’s got plenty of setups for where the series could go next. While most of these happen during the course of Stephen Strange’s journey through the multiverse, the movie saves the biggest one for the credits. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has two credits scenes, one that happens midway through and another that comes after the final credits have rolled. In case you’re pressed for time, only the movie’s first teaser seems relevant to…

Doctor Strange 2: Who played Black Bolt, Reed Richards, and Professor X?

With all magical possibility at its doorstep, it’s no surprise that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has some tricks up its sleeve. But the biggest and baddest of them all has got to be the appearance of the Illuminati, one of Marvel Comics’ most intimidating super-teams. On top of that, nearly every member of Multiverse of Madness’ Illuminati is an Easter egg for longtime fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or comics. Who are the Illuminati in Multiverse of Madness? Who were they in Marvel Comics? And…

George Pérez, legendary artist for Marvel and DC Comics, dies at 67

Best known for his well-populated crossover books, George Pérez died Friday at the age of 67, from complications of pancreatic cancer. Pérez’s work defined superhero comics in the 1980s and 1990s, and his impact on the genre still echoes through superhero media today. Over the course of the artist’s prolific comic book career, he did his best to draw every iconic DC and Marvel superhero, preferably all at once in the span of an epic double-page spread. Pérez is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Carol Flynn; his…
