EU’s message to Twitter on disinformation code

0 46

European policymakers, last year, published the Digital Services Act (DSA), according to which, technology companies such as Twitter, Google, Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Microsoft, among other giants will have to do more to tackle disinformation online. Twitter has now decided to leave the European Union‘s (EU) disinformation code and EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton has sent a warning to the social media company.

“Twitter leaves EU voluntary code of practice against disinformation. But obligations remain. You can run but you can’t hide,” Breton said in a tweet. “Beyond voluntary commitments, fighting disinformation will be legal obligation under DSA as of August 25. Our teams will be ready for enforcement,” he added.

What is EU’s disinformation code
EU’s disinformation code is a voluntary pact that groups together major social platforms. Launched in 2018, the EU’s code of practice on disinformation has almost three dozen signatories including the giants Meta, Google, Twitter, Microsoft and TikTok.

According to the DSA, companies which signed up to the code are required to provide regular progress reports with data on how much advertising revenue they had averted from disinformation actors, news agency Reuters reported.

These companies also have to provide information on the number or value of political advertisements accepted or rejected and instances of manipulative behaviours detected, the rules say. Failing to do so, companies face fines of as much as 6% of their global turnover.

PR company sues Twitter
Meanwhile, a former public relations firm for Twitter has sued the social media company for not paying its bills since Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition.

Twitter reportedly owes the PR company $830,498, comprising six unpaid invoices, plus costs for a subpoena in Twitter’s lawsuit to force Musk to complete the buyout after he tried to back out of the deal.

Citing public relations firm, news agency Reuters said that Twitter ended its contract on November 16 — three weeks after the buyout closed. It is to be noted that the company no longer has a media relations office. All requests for comment are returned with a poop emoji.
