Galaxy Z Flip 3 Folded Over 418,500 Times Without Damage

Samsung has rated the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to withstand 200,000 folds in its lifetime. That’s enough to last more than five years even if you fold the device 100 times a day. But it appears the device is capable of holding strong a lot longer than that. YouTuber Mrkeybrd recently put the Galaxy Z Flip 3 through a folding test and it reached over 418,500 folds before the hinge gave up (via). It refused to stay fully folded or unfolded after the marathon run.

The extreme fold test was live streamed on YouTube and ran from June 8 to June 13. Even though the hinge stopped working properly after such torture, the device itself didn’t break down. It was in perfect working condition at the end too. The touchscreen worked fine, and so did the cameras and speakers. That’s despite the clamshell foldable being submerged in water and covered in dirt and dust as part of this durability test. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was also dropped more than 20  times on concrete to simulate years of usage.

It is worth noting here that the hinge started to give up at the mark of around 352,000 folds. The device wasn’t folding properly sometimes. But it didn’t refuse to stay entirely open or closed for more than 60,000 additional folds.

This test is a testament to the durability improvements Samsung made on its foldable devices last year. Both the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are the world’s first foldables with an IP (ingress protection) rating for water resistance. They also come with a stronger frame. Perhaps a stronger folding screen too, which won’t break down on its own for years.

Samsung will build on this with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 this year

You are probably aware that Samsung is gearing up to launch its fourth-gen foldables later this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are rumored to go official in August. There have been plenty of leaks about the two foldables lately. The company is looking to build on the success of the 2021 models. While we don’t yet have much info regarding durability improvements, the upcoming devices will bring upgrades in numerous other ways. From more powerful cameras to bigger batteries and improved design, there’s a lot to be excited about.

With two more months to go for the official unveiling, we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 to appear in more leaks in the coming weeks. We will ensure to keep you updated.
