So, what’s new in the GoPro Hero 11 Black series?

GoPro has fitted all three new cameras with a larger sensor that can capture 5.3K resolution footage at 60 frames-per-second. With 5.3K video, you’ll be able to crop into the frame and still have enough resolution to natively display your videos on a 4K TV, which boasts 4x the number of pixels found in a 1080p HD television. That boosted sensor also improves the still photos available from this action camera – up to 27-megapixels.

For the first time, GoPro cameras can deliver one billion colours thanks to the addition of 10-bit colour footage. That’s roughly 64x the number of colours found in 8-bit, the format favoured by all previous GoPro cameras, which maxes-out at 16.7 million colours. What do all of those numbers mean? According to GoPro, 10-bit colour should remove any blockiness from the dramatic gradients found in the sky, snow or water in your footage.

But that new sensor isn’t just about video resolution and colours. GoPro has used a taller 8:7 native aspect ratio in its latest cameras – the largest vertical field of view ever on a GoPro. This means you can now capture more of a scene vertically and gives you much more flexibility in the edit.

GoPro Hero 11 Black footage can be cropped to an extra-tall 9:16 vertical aspect ratio to share on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. If you’d rather export cinematic 16:9 video for YouTube or to watch on your telly at home, the larger sensor size can cater to that too. As more and more people punish videos to multiple platforms – both social media clips designed to be viewed on phones and cinematic videos to sit down and enjoy on a television or 4K YouTube video.

That super-sized 1/1.9” sensor has enables a new HyperView feature, which is designed to bring an incredibly wide field-of-view (bordering on a fish-eye lens) that GoPro says enables a truly immersive view when filming first person view of yourself biking, skiing, surfing, motorcycling and similar activities. The field-of-view makes the activity on-screen look faster and more dramatic than previous GoPro cameras.

Elsewhere, GoPro’s Emmy award-winning HyperSmooth technology, which eliminates the wobbles and bumps from fast-paced videos, has received an upgrade this time around too. Dubbed HyperSmooth 5.0, the feature now includes in-camera 360-degree Horizon Lock that keeps the horizon in the right place – and dead steady – even if your camera rotates a full 360 degrees during capture. This should stop any motion sickness when reviewing footage of flips and spins.

GoPro Hero 11 Black, Hero 11 Black Creator Edition, and Hero 11 Black Mini all land with a new TimeWarp 3.0 functionality, which now captures in up to 5.3K (that’s a 91% increase in resolution compared to the 4K maximum resolution in the GoPro Hero 10 Black and other older cameras).

The cameras are fuelled by a new battery technology, dubbed Enduro, that improves camera performance in cold and moderate temperatures, extending recording times up to 38% in HERO11 Black. It also means your action shouldn’t shutdown in the coldest temperatures too.

While GoPro Enduro can been around in the past, it was always sold as an optional extra. For the first time, you’ll get the flagship battery chemistry in the box with your new camera.

GoPro has worked hard to ensure its new cameras are designed for both professional film crews and creators as well as enthusiasts who don’t want to spend hours tinkering with resolution settings. When setting up your GoPro, the US company will now ask whether you want to put the camera in Easy or Pro mode.

Easy controls make it easier than ever to record in the best setting for any situation, while Pro Controls unlock every aspect of your Hero 11 camera for maximum creative control. Likewise, the auto highlight reel means those who don’t want to spend the time to review all of their footage with get an AI-produced montage with the best jumps and wipe-outs.

GoPro Hero 11 Black arrives in a similar shell to its predecessor, with the same in-built mounting fingers to attach the camera to your helmet, selfie stick, skis, wheel arches, surfboard, and much more. Its waterproof without the need for an extra case and has multiple microphones to cancel-out wind noise.

In the box, you’ll find a long-lasting battery grip with built-in buttons for one-handed camera control and over four hours of 4K recording per charge. The Creator Edition also includes an optional directional microphone, external mic input, HDMI port for connecting to external displays, a high-output LED light and two cold shoe mounts for mounting additional accessories.

And finally, the Hero 11 Black Mini is a successor to the Hero 4 Session camera. It boasts the same sensor and performance as the Hero 11 Black, but squeezed into smaller, lighter hardware. There’s no screen, which makes room for a second pair of mounting fingers to make attaching the camera even easier. According to GoPro, the one-button design makes the Hero 11 Black Mini a perfect choice for people who want maximum simplicity without sacrificing even a hint of performance or quality.
