Guard rails on the side of the expressways are installed to ensure the safety of the vehicles. But in some cases, they can be lethal. We have seen accidents in past where the guard rails have peirced through the vehicles and here is one more such incident. The three passengers travelling in the vehicle are safe though. A miracle, indeed.

While the exact details of the accident remain unknown, the information in the local media says that the vehicle was taking a turn and it became uncontrollable. However, from the pictures, it seems like that the Carens was travelling at a high speed.

The guard rail pierced through the cabin of the Carens and we can see that the railing has come out on the other side of the vehicle. There were three passengers inside the car and all of them are severely injured. But none of the injuries are fatal. They were shifted to a local hospital.

The images also show badly damaged the Kia Carens. The front-end of the car took the initial impact and it is unrecognisable in the pictures. It is a miracle how the passengers of the Kia Carens got saved after this gruesome accident.

Kia has made significant efforts to provide safety features across all variants, including six airbags, ESC, seatbelt pretensioners, ABS, all-wheel disc brakes, brake assist system, and TPMS. As part of their Safer Cars for India initiative, Global NCAP has been evaluating numerous vehicles available in the Indian market.

While a 3-star rating in a crash test may not be considered outstanding, it is still an average score for an MPV that offers numerous safety features as standard. In the tested Kia Carens, the adult occupant protection score was 9.30 out of 17, while the child protection score was 30.99 out of 49. However, Global NCAP noted that the structure and footwell area of the vehicle were unstable, and the body shell lacked the ability to absorb additional impacts.
Improperly installed or maintained open-ended guard rails can be extremely dangerous, despite their intended purpose of protecting vehicles. Although guard rails are typically equipped with barriers at their ends to prevent accidents, they can still pose serious hazards. In certain foreign countries, cable barriers are used as an alternative to minimize such risks. Incidently, Cyrus Mistry was killed in a similar incident and following the incident, NHAI installed crash attenuators at the same spot.
