HBO Max Gets its First Ever Price Increase in the US
Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that the monthly price of the ad-free HBO Max plan will be increasing from $14.99 to $15.99. The price hike comes just ahead of the debut of the highly anticipated videogame adaptation, The Last of Us, which lands on the platform this Sunday.
The press release outlined the following statement on the increase: “This price increase of one dollar will allow us to continue to invest in providing even more culture-defining programming and improving our customer experience for all users.”
For new customers, the price increase comes into effect today, 12 January 2023. Existing customers will see the new costs reflected in their next bill on or after 11 February 2023 – so there is just under a month’s notice to cancel, should you wish.
The announcement did not mention an increase for the ad-supported tier, so it is assumed that this will stay at the monthly price of $9.99. The release did not specify any cost changes to HBO Max in other regions such as Latin America and Europe.
In recent months we have seen price hikes from Netflix, Amazon and Disney+, so it is unsurprising to see HBO Max follow suit. This is the first price increase since the platform launched in May 2020.
