Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami buys a Royal Enfield Continental GT 650

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has just bought a new Royal Enfield Continental GT 650. He opted for the top-end variant which is called Mr. Clean. Essentially, the motorcycle’s fuel tank is finished in chrome. It is priced at Rs. 3.31 lakhs ex-showroom whereas the starting price of the Continental GT 650 is Rs. 3.05 lakhs ex-showroom.

The GT 650 is currently the flagship model of Royal Enfield. Before the GT 650, the GT 535 used to be the flagship motorcycle for Royal Enfield. Now, GT 535 has been discontinued. Royal Enfield is working on more new motorcycles that could be the new flagship.

Many people consider the Continental GT 650 to be one of the most beautiful motorcycles because of its Cafe racer design language. In today’s world, not many manufacturers are doing cafe racers. The motorcycle comes with clip-on handlebars, and a circular halogen headlamp, single-seat with a racing cowl, a 12.5-litre fuel tank and blacked-out spoked wheels.

Royal Enfield offers several accessories for the Continental GT 650. There are touring seats, suspension finishers, engine guards, racing single-seat cowls, fly screens, reservoir caps, oil filter caps, bar-end finishers, heel guards, swingarm bobbins, sump guard, fork gaiters, intake covers, bar-end mirrors and touring mirrors. Royal Enfield also offers soft pannier rails, water-resistant covers and black soft panniers.

The GT 650 comes with a 648 cc, fuel-injected, four-stroke, parallel-twin petrol engine that is air-oil cooled. It produces 47 hp of max power at 7,150 rpm and a peak torque output of 52 Nm at 5,250 rpm. It comes paired with a 6-speed gearbox which gets a slip and assist clutch. The engine gets a 270-degree crank for a deep rumbling sound. Moreover, Royal Enfield says that 80 percent of torque is available as low as 2,500 rpm. The engine is known for its smoothness and torquey delivery.

Other than Mr. Clean, there are four colours. There is British Racing Green and Rocker Red. These are priced at Rs. 3.05 lakhs ex-showroom. Then there are DUX Deluxe and Ventura Storm. Both of these are priced at Rs. 3.14 lakhs ex-showroom.

Braking duties are done by 320 mm disc in the front and 240 mm disc at the rear. The motorcycle comes with a dual-channel Anti-lock braking system as standard. Royal Enfield is using 18-inch spoked wheels. The front tyres measure 100/90 whereas the rear measures 130/70. Tyres are sourced from Ceat and are of tube-type.

The chassis is of a tubular frame with bolted trussing. It was designed by Harris Performance. Suspension duties are done by telescopic forks in the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear. The front is a 41 mm unit with 110 mm of travel whereas the rear one has 88 mm of travel and gets a pre-load adjustment. The seat height of the Continental GT 650 is 804 mm. The motorcycle is on the heavier side as it weighs 202 kgs without fuel.

Royal Enfield is working on a lot of motorcycles for the Indian market. This month they will launch the Hunter 350 and later this year they will launch the much-awaited Super Meteor 650. They earlier launched the Classic Reborn, Scram 411 and Meteor 350. All of them have received a good response. a
