Intel and NVIDIA are growing their metaverse horizon, but who will be the best metaverse chip marker

The concept of the metaverse has inspired the tech industry for decades. Long after the virtual world Second Life popped up in the mid-2000s, gaming companies like Epic Games (maker of Fortnite) and Roblox have started describing their worlds as an early version of the metaverse. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook’s parent company name to Meta signaling his intention to design the new immersive internet in its image. So far, only one chip manufacturer, NVIDIA, has announced that it is building a platform for metaverse. Called Omniverse, its chips are designed for “connecting 3D worlds into a shared virtual universe.” But companies like Intel are also setting their pace to become the number one Metaverse chip maker.

The term ” metaverse” refers to immersive virtual worlds that may be accessed via the internet and gadgets such as virtual reality goggles. As a result of the tendency, there is a demand for additional computing power. Other businesses, such as NVIDIA Corp. and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., have seen their stock prices rise in recent months due to investor interest in the metaverse.

 

Intel vs NVIDIA: Who will make a better metaverse chip maker?

 

Intel

Intel is entering the conversation. Intel will release a new series of graphics processors starting in the first quarter of 2022, which it announced in August 2021, and says will power the metaverse. Intel’s Raja Koduri, who leads Intel’s Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group, said in an exclusive interview that the computing power of today’s chips will need to improve 1000-fold to power the metaverse. Intel can definitely become one of the best Metaverse chip makers in the world.

 

Nvidia

To simplify, Nvidia is well positioned to grow alongside the metaverse-related gaming industry, or better the experience industry, by providing solutions for AI cloud-computing and 3D visualization technology. Notable highlights of Nvidia’s product portfolio include (not exhaustive): GeForce GPUs to power a cutting-edge gaming experience; GeForce NOW to support computing-power intensive game streaming services and related infrastructure; and GPU software to support cloud-based visual and virtual computing.

Moreover, one of NVIDIA’s most interesting ‘metaverse products’ is the company’s ‘Omniverse’ software, which is a cloud-based development framework for the creation of 3D immersive and virtual worlds. The ‘Omniverse’ platform allows for real-time photorealistic visualizations and incorporates AI for supporting lifelike simulations.

 

The Zettaverse

At the start of the previous section, I promised that Intel is busy with important stuff. How important? How about Earth-saving-important, which is quite an apt topic currently given the COP26 summit going on. In particular, consider the global data center energy consumption, from two sources:

The finding that global data centers likely consumed around 205 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2018, or 1 percent of global electricity use, lies in stark contrast to earlier extrapolation-based estimates that showed rapidly-rising data center energy use over the past decade (Figure 2).

The International Energy Agency estimates that 1% of all global electricity is used by data centers and that by 2025, data centers will consume 1/5 of the world’s power supply.

As such, companies like Intel and Nvidia can actually make a large contribution to the climate change actions. Indeed, a while ago, Intel made an arguably far more significant announcement than any of the metaverse stuff like Metaverse chip (but to which as always the stock sneezed at): Intel plans to achieve zettascale performance in 2027.
