  • This year, there will be a new periscope lens system used for the telephoto camera in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
  • This will allow for 5x or 6x optical zoom. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers 3x optical zoom.
  • However, last year’s sensor will be retained for the smaller iPhone 15 Pro.
  • The main reason Apple is limiting the periscope technology to the iPhone 15 Pro Max is because of the internal space that is needed for the advanced hardware.
  • Even with the extra available space on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple will have to reorganise the camera module.
  • The last time Apple got a redesigned camera layout was with the iPhone 11 series in 2019.

When the current iPhone 14 Pro Max is held in landscape mode with the side button at the top, the telephoto lens is closest to the top corner of the device, while the ultra-wide-angle lens sits below between the flash and LiDAR sensor. In comparison, the ultra-wide-angle lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be pushed to the corner of the array, while the telephoto lens will take its place between the flash and LiDAR.

How does a smartphone periscope camera work?

The periscope lens system usually uses a primary lens to capture a photo, with an angled mirror or prism reflecting the light 90 degrees toward a second lens that then sends it to the image sensor. The main image sensor and secondary lens are positioned sideways inside the phone to extend the focal length and this probably takes up a significant area.

The iPhone 15 series will probably have four models, including the vanilla iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
