New MG electric car to launch in India next year: expected price, launch timeline
MG Motor India President and MD Rajeev Chaba had earlier highlighted the company plans to introduce an “electric crossover based on a global platform” by 2023. MG plans to develop a more compact and affordable electric car specifically for the Indian market as well as adjoining markets in the Indian subcontinent.
MG new EV in 2023
MG Motors India has announced that it would be introducing a new affordable EV for the Indian market. The company has also furnished the expected price range and a suggestive timeline for the vehicle. MG aims to position the upcoming new EV lower than the current MG ZS EV to bring a larger customer base.
MG intends to price the new EV from Rs 10 to 15 lakh in India and plans to introduce the vehicle sometime in the first half of 2023. The car will be based on an already established international platform.
Previous reports suggested that MG Motors India would utilise the SAIC-GM-Wuling Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform that does duty on some Chinese EV models. The platform supports smaller and more affordable city-friendly EVs that include the Baojun E100, E200, E300, and E300 Plus and the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. Moreover, to keep costs in check, the Indian version could adopt multiple design elements and a fair amount of part sharing could happen.
Unlike in international markets, MG Motors will have to shift away from two-door and quirky design elements. Indian customers would also want at least 300km of electric range along with some comfort and luxury features to up the ante on the value-for-money front.
