Maruti Suzuki is putting together a new crossover based on the Baleno premium hatchback. Code-named the YTB, the new Baleno-based crossover is tipped to launch at the upcoming 2023 Indian Auto Expo. Maruti Suzuki is feverishly testing the YTB ahead of the official launch, and here are new spyshots that reveal some styling elements of the new crossover.

The YTB will have a footprint similar to that of the Baleno but will be more butch, with a larger honeycomb front grille, and a raised stance. The profile of the crossover will get flared wheel arches while the rear end styling is likely to be similar to that of the hatchback it’s based on. The engines and gearboxes are likely to be carried over from the Baleno. Also, the 1 liter turbo petrol engine – previously seen on the Baleno RS – could make a comeback in the crossover.

Where will the Baleno YTB crossover be priced and positioned?

Below the Maruti Brezza. In terms of both pricing and positioning, the crossover based on the Baleno is likely to sit under the Brezza. It’ll be marginally pricier than the Baleno, which starts from Rs. 6.42 lakh. There’s a fair bit of price gap between the Baleno and the Brezza, which starts from Rs. 7.99 lakh. The new crossover will bridge this gap, giving customers more choice. For those who don’t want higher ground clearance without a full fledged SUV stance, the Baleno Crossover will be the one to go for.

The Baleno sold in India is offered with the 1.2 liter-4 cylinder K12C petrol engine that puts out 88 Bhp-113 Nm. Key highlights of this engine include twin injectors/cylinder and variable valve timing for both the inlet and exhaust valves. This engine is also offered with a CNG-Petrol dual fuel option. 5 speed manual and automated manual transmissions (AMT) are on offer with this engine. This could be one option for the Baleno Cross. The other option is expected to be the 1 liter0-3 cylinder turbo petrol engine with 110 Bhp-170 Nm. The turbo petrol engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The YTB is likely to get a CNG option as well given the fact that Maruti Suzuki is offering CNG on nearly every new car it launches.

As for competition for the Baleno YTB crossover, there’s no direct competition just as yet. The i20 Active is no longer being produced, and the same are the cases with the likes of the Volkswagen Cross Polo and the Fiat Avventura. In that sense, the YTB crossover should have an unhindered run, serving as a more butch alternative to the best-selling Baleno. In price terms though, the crossover is expected to rub shoulders with many sub-4 meter compact SUVs that are priced much lower than the Maruti Brezza. Some names that come to mind include the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger and Tata Punch.
