One version of the Galaxy S23 won’t be as fast as the others

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series will ship with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor globally. All three models are getting an overlocked version of the latest Qualcomm chipset. However, one of the new Galaxy flagships might still not be as fast as the rest of the lineup. The 128GB storage variant of the Galaxy S23 will reportedly miss out on UFS 4.0 storage.

Samsung announced UFS (Universal Flash Storage) version 4.0 in May last year. The company was expected to use the new and upgraded storage solution in the Galaxy S23 series. All rumors so far have suggested the same. But noted tipster Ice Universe is claiming that it’s only partially true. Because the cheapest Galaxy S23 won’t get it. It will feature UFS 3.1, which is what you get on the Galaxy S22 series.

This is likely a cost-cutting move from Samsung. The company is seemingly finding it difficult to avoid a price hike for its flagship smartphones this year. But this means significantly slower data transfer rates. UFS 4.0 allows for sequential read speeds of up to 4,200 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s. Those numbers for UFS 3.1 come in at 2,100 MB/s and 1,200 MB/s, respectively.

This essentially means UFS 4.0 storage solution is twice as fast as UFS 3.1. As such, the 128GB Galaxy S23 could be much slower in booting up, opening apps, and many other areas than the rest of the line lineup, including the 256GB variant of the same device. It makes sense to just skip the base variant. Unfortunately, not many may realize the difference. This is disappointing on Samsung’s part.

On a brighter note, Samsung will offer a free storage upgrade during the Galaxy S23 pre-order. You can get the 256GB variant at the price of the 128GB one if you pre-order the phone. This offer will be available for all Galaxy S23 models, at least in some markets. You can pay for the lower storage variant and get the higher storage variant.

The entire Galaxy S23 lineup will get LPDDR5X RAM

Samsung may be treating the base Galaxy S23 variant a little unfairly by including a slower storage chip, but it is giving the entire lineup its fastest RAM solution. All three models will feature LPDDR5X RAM, which is an upgrade from the LPDDR5 solution found in last year’s Galaxy flagships. Just a couple more days to go now before the Galaxy S23 lineup is official. Samsung will unveil the phones this Wednesday, February 1. The Galaxy Unpacked event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. PT/1:30 p.m. ET.
