Samsung has added a shock dispersion layer to its foldable displays

On stage at Unpacked 2023, Samsung revealed that it changed the structure of its foldable displays for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Their foldable panels have the same aspect ratios and sizes as before, but they should now be more resilient than ever.
Samsung says that both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 “meet durability expectations,” and indeed, both phones have Armor Aluminum frames, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for the cover screens and back panels, and an IPX8 rating for water-resistance.
In addition, the company says its new Flex Hinge has a dual rail structure that diffuses external impacts. And interestingly enough, Samsung revealed on stage at Unpacked that it added an extra layer to its latest foldable displays.

Although the company didn’t go into too much detail, it revealed at Unpacked that the foldable panels employed by the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 introduce a new layer to the mix. It’s a shock dispersion layer.
The theory is that this new layer will make the foldable displays more resilient, particularly when the devices get accidentally dropped and hit the ground. This is an inner layer, so it shouldn’t provide extra protection against scratches, but it nonetheless represents another step toward creating the perfect foldable panel.
Samsung appears to find new ways to improve foldable display technology every year, and we’ve come a long way since the original Fold got announced in 2019.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are now available for pre-order and will hit the shelves on August 11. In most markets, pre-order customers can benefit from a free memory upgrade from 256GB to 512GB.
