Sony says it has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles
Sony‘s gaming division has announced that it has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles, attributing the milestone to ease in supply chain problems. Sony launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and since then the company, just like others in the tech industry, struggled with supply chain issues due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalise so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand. Now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met,” said Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan.
Sony said it expects to sell 25 million PS5 units this year, which would be a record for any PlayStation device.

In its earnings report announced in April, Sony said that it has shipped over 38 million units. The Japanese electronics giant has claimed to have shipped 6.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles between January and March 2022. The company shipped only 2 million units in the same quarter in 2021.
PlayStation 5 shortage
PlayStation 5 eluded customers and it was sporadically available during restocking periods in India. At CES 2023 in January, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 shortage is over.
“Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward,” Ryan said. At that time, the conglomerate announced that it sold around 30 million consoles.
So, technically, Sony sold 10 million PS5 consoles in 7 months as compared to 30 million in the timeframe between November 2020 and January 2023 (about 25 months). The console was made available in India in February 2021.
