Suzuki Escudo and Torqnado Names Trademarked: Could Be Used On 7-Seat Grand Vitara And eVx

Suzuki Motor Corporation has recently trademarked two names in India, Escudo and Torqnado, raising speculations about their usage in upcoming Maruti Suzuki models. The trademarks were filed in January 2024 and approved this month.

A speculative render of the 7 seat Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The SUV is slated for a 2025 launch, and could be named the Escudo.

While the exact purpose of these trademarks is yet to be confirmed, it’s possible that Suzuki might use the Escudo name for the upcoming Maruti SUV. Suzuki used to market the previous generation Grand Vitara compact SUV under the Escudo name in specific international markets. On the other hand, the Torqnado could be used for another passenger vehicle. We anticipate that the eVX electric SUV’s production variant could get the Torqnado badge given the fact that electric cars are all about massive torque right off idle.

Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for an eventful 2024 with the launches of the new-generation Swift and Dzire in the pipeline. Still, the year’s highlight will undoubtedly be the introduction of the brand’s first fully electric vehicle – the eVX, which could be known as the Torqnado.

Grand Vitara 7-seater

Maruti will launch a long-wheelbase version of its popular compact SUV, the Grand Vitara, offering 6- and 7-seater versions. Only a few changes will be made to the SUV, but we can expect minor exterior changes. This includes an all-new, sharper grille and minor modifications to the headlight setup. The SUV will be longer than the current Grand Vitara to accommodate an extra row of seats.

Maruti will offer a 7-seater variant with bench seats and a much more premium 6-seater variant with captain seats. This SUV will be launched under a different name (Escudo?) and rival other cars such as the Mahindra XUV 700, Hyundai Alcazar, and Tata Safari. The upcoming SUV from the company could offer a 1.5-litre three-cylinder strong hybrid petrol engine, which is a staple on the higher variants of the 5 seat Grand Vitara.

While Maruti has yet to reveal a date for the 7 seat Grand Vitara, we anticipate a 2025 launch for the new SUV. As is with the case of the 5 seat Grand Vitara, a Toyota badged version of the 7 seat model is also in the pipeline.

Maruti Suzuki eVX (production name Torqnado?)

Based on the Concept eVX, this electric SUV is expected to set new standards in the compact SUV segment. Based on the YY8 skateboard platform derived from Toyota’s 27PL platform, the car will measure approximately 4,300 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height. The YY8 platform is designed especially for EVs and promises to offer a spacious and versatile interior.

Based on the recent spotting of test mules, this SUV will feature a conventional headlight with a mono LED projector setup instead of the current trend of split headlights. Triple ice-cube-effect LED DRLs beautifully adorn the headlights.

The EV will not lack features; ADAS, a 360-degree camera, all four disc brakes, a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, and ventilated front seats are anticipated.

As per reports, the SUV will offer two options for the battery pack: a 45 kWh and a 60 kWh. Also, rumours suggest that the SUV will also come with an AWD option. The larger 60 kWh variant will deliver a claimed range of 550 km. The SUV will rival popular players such as the Tata Nexon.EV, XUV 400, MG ZS EV, and upcoming electric cars from Mahindra. The anticipated launch date of the car is end-2024, with a price tag of under Rs. 25 lakh.
