NASA unveils breakthrough 3D-printable super alloy

Scientists working with NASA and Ohio State University have created a new super alloy that is stronger and more durable than any current state-of-the-art 3D-printed alloy. The material, called GRX-180, may help create parts for future spacecraft. “This superalloy has the potential to dramatically improve the strength and toughness of components and parts used in aviation and space exploration,” Dr. Tim Smith, lead author of the study and a researcher at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, explained in a…

3D-printable 5-metal alloy proves ultra-strong but ductile

With new manufacturing techniques comes the opportunity for brand new metal alloys with a huge range of possible properties. A team of researchers has now developed a new 3D-printable alloy with a specific nanostructure that makes it ultra strong and ductile. Most common alloys, like stainless steel or bronze, are made with one primary metal mixed with smaller amounts of other elements. But an emerging class of materials known as high entropy alloys (HEAs) involves mixing five different elements together in roughly equal…

Lab-grown plant matter marks a step towards 3D-printable wood

Chopping down trees and processing the wood isn’t the most efficient or environmentally friendly way to make furniture or building materials. Scientists at MIT have now made breakthroughs in a process that could one day let us 3D print and grow wood directly into the shape of furniture and other objects.Wood may be a renewable resource, but we’re using it up much faster than we’re replenishing it. Deforestation is having a drastic impact on wildlife and exacerbating the effects of climate change. Since our appetite for…

Discarded glass used to replace sand in 3D-printable concrete

Concrete is a very popular building material, enough so that one of its key ingredients – sand – is in increasingly short supply. Scientists are thus now exploring the possibility of replacing that sand with glass waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.Although glass is considered a recyclable material, it quite often doesn't get recycled. This may be due to a lack of properly equipped recycling facilities, or the fact that glass waste frequently takes the form of numerous fragments that are too small to sort by…
